One passenger dead, several injured after Singapore Airlines flight from London encounters “severe turbulence”

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 21, Singapore Airlines confirmed that one passenger died after a flight from London and bound for Singapore was rocked by a severe turbulence.

“Singapore Airlines flight #SQ321, operating from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on 20 May 2024, encountered severe turbulence en-route.”

SIA confirmed that “there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.”

Singapore Airlines also offered its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, whose information such as nationality and age were not disclosed.

Due to the situation, the plane was diverted to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, where it landed at 3:45 pm (local time).

The airline also said that they will “provide all possible assistance to all passengers and crew on board the aircraft.”

“We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed,” the Singaporean flag carrier added.

Thailand airport officials confirm the death of a 73-year-old British man on board the Singapore-bound Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 that experienced severe turbulence mid-air.

Thai airport official say that the passenger, who had a pre-existing heart condition, likely died due to a heart attack.

Meanwhile, a total of 30 injured SQ321 passengers have been brought to hospital, including 1 crew member and 7 crticially-injured passengers who sustained head injuries.

Singapore Airlines will be sending a team to Bangkok, Thailand this evening to assist passengers of flight SQ321.

Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam says that he is “greatly saddened by the loss of life caused by severe turbulence on board the SQ321 flight.”

He adds that Singapore Airlines and gov’t ministries working with authorities in Bangkok.
